Building a Particle Detector

  • Constructed a Cloud Chamber - a particle detector capable of showing one the various charged particles passing through it.

  •  Carried out a frame-by-frame analysis of radioactive and cosmic particles, tracking displacement and velocity

  • Wrote a 4000 word essay (Extended Essay) about my various findings from 8 different experiments

Secretary General, Paris Model United Nations

  • I served as Secretary General for Paris Model United Nations where I was in charge of an international conference of over 700 participants from all over the world.

  • Preparation for the conference was a 9 month process where I worked with a team of 3 deputies. 9 months consisted of planning of committee topics, themes and writing detailed research reports. It involved a rigorous interviewing process to select committee Chairs for the conference as well as hours of correspondence and meetings. My opening address of Paris Model United Nations is linked!

  • During this process, starting off as a shy delegate within the weekly meetings at school, I worked hard to overcome my fear of public speaking, fear of opposition and began to fall in love with the conviction of defending something you truly believe in.

European Centre for Nuclear Research
(CERN)

  • This was exceptional opportunity I received to intern at CERN.

  • I spent three weeks asking more questions than I thought I could, spending hours at morning lectures, taking notes and learning about topics such as antimatter, quantum field theory and dark energ

  • I worked on engineering Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs), which were to be part of the CMS experiment. I learned the mathematics, the part of their Python programming and the Physics behind the GEMs.

  • It was at CERN, ironically, that I decided I wanted to become an engineer. After meeting the experimental physicists who headed the ATLAS project (a detector making up the Large Hadron Collider), I saw the immediate greatness in engineering.

Motherson Sumi Systems

  • Worked as a mechanical engineer intern at Motherson Sumi Systems, Pretoria.

  • Here, I learnt a great deal about injection molding and the manufacturing process. The company used plastic injection moulding methods for various automobile parts including the vehicle bumpers.

  • Wrote 8 reports on the physics of injection molding machines, mechanical processes within the factory (such as welding and milling) and the process of CAD design (involving CATIA)

Code for Bhutan

  • Spent 4 weeks in a high intensity coding course which equipped students with the knowledge of HTML, CSS and Javascript

  • Every week, the class would code a new landing page, website and learn more skills.

  • This was an excellent course to enhance my knowledge of software.
